The current GMC Terrain has quietly occupied a spot in the lineup since 2018, receiving a delayed facelift in 2022. Yet, despite its age, it remains GMC's best-selling SUV for the first half of this year. Now, GMC is introducing a new model, marking the next generation of its entry-level SUV.
At first glance, the 2025 GMC Terrain might not appear drastically different. The overall design stays close to the previous version, with signature C-shaped LED daytime running lights up front and a distinct upward kick to the beltline at the C-pillar. However, the new model features a more pronounced forward slant at the C-pillar, similar to the Chevrolet Equinox. Up front, the grille is larger and more rectangular, sitting atop a fascia with sharper lines and angles.

The rear has also been refreshed, with straighter lines on a redesigned lower fascia that now incorporates vertically aligned reflectors. The C-shaped taillights are more compact, and the small rear quarter windows have been replaced with larger glass panes. Additionally, the Terrain now offers a two-tone roof option, enhanced by the floating roof effect created by the redesigned C-pillar.
Inside, the changes are much more noticeable. Dominating the center of the dashboard is a 15-inch portrait-oriented digital screen, accompanied by an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. Both come standard across the Terrain range, serving as the centerpiece of a major tech upgrade that includes 15 driver-assistance features and Google Assistant integration. Optional features include a power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, 5G hotspot capability, and eight exterior cameras more than any previous Terrain.

Under the hood, the 2025 Terrain sees little change. It retains the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. However, the engine is now paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. At launch, all-wheel drive is standard, though GMC has confirmed that a front-wheel-drive version will be available at a later date.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about the new Terrain, like exact dimensions or chassis updates, although it appears slightly taller and wider. The entry-level Elevation trim will replace the outgoing SLE and SLT, hitting dealerships in late 2024. Following that, the AT4 and Denali models will arrive as 2026 editions, offering more luxury, additional features, and off-road enhancements for the AT4.

Pricing details will be revealed closer to the on-sale date, but with the added technology and standard all-wheel drive, it wouldn't be surprising if the base price climbs significantly above the current starting price of $30,095.
