It's been a minute since BMW introduced its 5 Series sedan in North America. That may change soon, at least for one or two trim levels. But for now, the latest flagship 5er is the only Euro deal. BMW unveiled the 2025 5 Series Touring on Tuesday, now available in diesel, hybrid or electric models.
Following the increasing trend of new cars, the 2025 BMW 5 Series Touring is bigger than ever. At 199 inches long, it now sits just one inch behind the previous generation BMW 7 Series (G11). This is not only true for the car body, let's not forget that the latest sedan 5 grew by leaps and bounds when it launched in 2023. The car is also slightly wider at 74, 8 inches and longer at 59.6 inches. While that's not good news for people with limited parking space, it's good news for people who use the train the way they want to use it: to move a lot.

With the seats in the back, there is 20.1 cubic feet of space. Folded, this increases to 60 cubic feet. Compared to its German competitors, the BMW has a little more space than the Audi A6 Avant but it is still behind the Mercedes-Benz E-Class by a few cubes - as long as you don't count the hybrid version that can access from Merc. which is missing a small space on the back for the battery. The stats for BMW are the same whether you choose combustion Touring or electric i5.
Speaking of electric power, the i5 is the model of choice for BMW fans who want to go fast. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive is top of the line with 593 horsepower and a maximum of 605 pound-feet of torque in boost mode. It's the same configuration found in the sedan, although the larger sedans are a little less compact.

BMW claims 0 to 62 mph arrives in 3.9 seconds, with a factory top speed of 143 mph. Stepping up to the BMW i5 eDrive40 model removes the front motor, giving you a maximum output of 335 hp and a sprint to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds. The business is close, which goes up to 348 kilometers compared to 314 in the European WLTP cycle.
In the world of combustion, the new 5 Series Touring still uses mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The 530e uses BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor that produces a combined 295 hp and an electric range of up to 60 kilometers. All-wheel-drive models have the same power, but the range drops to a maximum of 55 mph.

The 520d uses a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with a mild hybrid system to produce 195 hp, offered with rear drive or all-wheel drive. Then there's the 540d xDrive Touring, which puts a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I6 hybrid into the mix for 295 hp. What we don't see said in BMW announcement is anything about the M5 Touring. We've seen several camouflaged prototypes being tested around the world, and while the standard 5er sedan isn't making its way to the U.S., rumors suggest that the hot M5 sedan will be coming to these shores. It is likely to have a version of the XM hybrid, it can develop up to 700 hp.
Here's a way to send a wake-up call to Audi RS6 Avant owners. We should learn more about the new M5 in the coming months. For now, European buyers can get their hands on the new 5 Series sedan from May as well as the BMW i5 Touring and four-cylinder mild hybrid models. Hybrid models and the 540d xDrive will follow later this summer.
